Some may offer personalized diets and workout schedules, others may assign point values for foods, and a number of points that you are allowed to eat in a day. If you are not interested in joining an online diet website, there are other ways in which to diet online. Many websites have dieting software that you can buy. Depending on the program, it may include calorie counters, carb counters, a journal for you to enter your activities and what you ate, charts to track your weight loss, etc. Most are available through a download to your computer.

The success of losing weight while dieting online, much like anything in this life, is your ability to follow it. Since you are not required to attend meetings, you run into the "accountability" issue. No one is there to specifically tell you that you need to eat less or exercise more. Some online support groups can give you encouragement, but it is still up to you to modify your diet and exercise regime.

What can you do to ensure that your online diet will succeed? Start a journal. You can find a website that offers this as part of a membership, or do it offline with a good old fashioned notebook or journal. You can make it as formal or informal as you like. The basics of it would be:

  • Write down everything that you eat. Even cough syrup contains calories that should be counted.
  • Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. If need be, fill an empty milk jug with water, and try to drink a gallon a day. Notate how much water you are drinking.
  • If you feel tempted to eat, grab your journal instead. Jot down what you want to eat and the reason you want to eat it. You may find out more about what patterns in how you address issues in your life with food. Realizing this may help you break patterns.
  • Use your journal as a tool to self discovery. It is multi- faceted. You can use your journal to express sorrow, anger or happiness. If you angry or upset with someone, you can work these feelings out with yourself first, and talk to the person later without saying something you may regret.
