Weight Loss Physician
In our efforts to lose weight, do not overlook the importance of having a weight loss physician. Before starting any diet or exercise program it is always advised to consult your doctor, especially if you have a considerable amount of weight to lose. There are many reasons to do this, primarily for health and safety.
Starting a weight loss program with the supervision of your physician can help you attain your goals. Talk to him or her about the reasons you want to lose weight. More than likely, your doctor will be more than willing to help you, that is what they are there for, after all!
If you have been seeing the same physician for some time, he will have your "medical history" which would include what you have been treated for in the past, what medications you are or have been on, your weight historically, allergies, and other information that play a vital role in your overall health and wellness.
After reviewing this information, he should be able to give you a general outline of what you can do to lose weight. If you are considerably overweight, he may prescribe medication to help curb your appetite. If this is the case you may be required to "weigh in" on a weekly or bi- weekly basis. This helps your doctor ( and you ) keep track of the progress you are making. It also gives you a chance to touch base if you are having side-effects from medication, or are feeling pain or discomfort from physical activities.
Even if your doctor doesn't prescribe medication, "weighing in" with them is never a bad idea. This will give you a trackable graph (that is confirmed by a third party) to measure your progress. Depending on your doctor, appointments are not usually needed and it isn't considered an office visit. Most times the actual "weigh in" is done by the nurse on duty.
Your physician can offer advice about what kind of diet and exercise program you should be following. As we all well know, there are so many different diets out there it is hard to keep track of them.
Not every diet is for every dieter. Just because a friend lost weight using a certain diet doesn't mean it will work for you. Your physician can review your medical history to see what type of diet is best suited for your needs. He should also be able to help you set realistic weight loss goals for yourself. Weight loss requires time, patience and effort and your doctor will tell you this. You can't expect to lose 50 pounds in 1 month. If you do, you are sure to fail. Instead, set little goals. Instead of looking at the "big picture" of 50 pounds that you need to lose, break it into 5 pound increments. 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 15 pounds and so on. The "minor" victories of accomplishing your 5 pound target goals will soon add up to the big 50!
